Abstract

This study sought to determine the extent of awareness and compliance on the prevention of lifestyle related diseases among government officials in La Trinidad, Benguet in terms of their lifestyle practices categorized to diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habits. It also determined if age and years of have significant influences on the level of awareness and compliance to the lifestyle practices of the respondents. In addition, the study looks into the relationship of extent of awareness and compliance on the prevention of lifestyle related diseases through the lifestyle practices.

The total number of respondents was fifty four (54). These respondents are government officials from the Municipality of La Trinidad, Benguet including municipal officials and barangay officials. Quantitative and a descriptive research were used to gather data. Using checklist questionnaire as the primary tool, data was collected, tabulated, statistically analyzed, and interpreted with the use of frequency distribution, weighted mean, t â€" test, F-test, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient, and 4 â€" point Likert scale.
The frequency distribution was used to determine the percentages on the profile of the respondents in terms of age and length in service. While the weighted mean was used to evaluate the level of awareness and compliance of the respondents in terms of diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habits.
The t â€" test was used to determine the significant difference of the extent of awareness and compliance when individual characteristics with one sample mean is considered while F-test was used to test the presence of significant differences between the awareness and compliance in terms of the different lifestyle practices in relation to age and length in service. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the extent of awareness and extent of compliance in terms of the diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habit. The 4 â€" point Likert scale was used to indicate the respondents’ degree of extent of awareness and compliance.

Findings revealed that the respondents have moderate awareness on preventive measures of lifestyle related diseases regarding their lifestyle practices: diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habits. Although, the respondents have moderate compliance with the different preventive measures on diet, environment, and habits; they have slight compliance to exercise and relaxation. The respondents’ age have no significant effect while years of service show a significant effect on the extent of awareness of the respondents in terms of the diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habits. Regarding the relationship between the extent of awareness and the extent of compliance in all categories of lifestyle practices namely diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habits, the results revealed that the more knowledgeable the respondent is the more likely he will comply on the preventive measures.

Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that the respondents have sufficient knowledge on the preventive measures of lifestyle related diseases in terms of diet, exercise, environment, relaxation, and habits that enables them to comply with it satisfactorily. Age does not affect the respondents’ extent of awareness and compliance on the preventive measures of lifestyle related diseases in terms of diet, exercise, relaxation, environment and habit. Also, period of service do affect the respondents’ extent of awareness but does not affect the respondents’ extent of awareness on the preventive measures of lifestyle related diseases in terms of diet, exercise, relaxation, environment, and habit. Thus, government officials should increase their compliance on the different preventive measures of lifestyle related diseases specifically on exercise and relaxation despite how knowledgeable they are. Submitting themselves for physical examinations and lifestyle regimen such as exercises should be observed.

Basing from the findings, it is recommended that health centers should stress on monitoring government employees ‘ health status(such as blood pressure taking) and do physical examination including annual breast examination for the females and rectal digital examination for the males. Stressing on initiating seminars and symposiums on health prevention of lifestyle related diseases to provide thorough awareness campaign mainly focusing on government employees. In addition, Department of Health should design a dietary plan intentionally for office workers. A concrete exercise regimen should be included in the weekly plan to be implemented at least twice a week. And finally, similar researches or studies in the future which may include variables like monthly income, sex, and family history are recommended.
